Distance from the Sun
, published by Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 2004, is the sixteenth in an annual series celebrating the handmade book. A retrospective collection of thirty prose poems from the past thirty years of Louis Jenkins’ writing career, the poems provide the foundation for this collaborative artists’ book featuring letterpress printed text, hand-drawn illustrations, and fine binding.

Text by Louis Jenkins was letterpress printed using photopolymer plates by Sara Langworthy and Beth Carls-Larson. Editions were designed and bound under the direction of Jeff Rathermel and Jana Pullman. Eureka Sans fonts from FontFont were used for text and titling. All editions include original illustrations by Chandler O’Leary.

The Standard Edition

The Standard Edition, edition of 40, has a hard cover wrapped in copper Japanese book cloth and Gampi Unryu paper. Text and illustrations are printed on Mohawk Superfine. End sheets are of Earth Ingres paper. A cloth covered slipcase protects the volume. Signed by Louis Jenkins.

Since 1988, Winter Book has engaged artists, designers, papermakers, printers, bookbinders and community volunteers in producing a handmade, limited edition artist’s book featuring poetry or prose by a Minnesota author or editor. The artistry and hand craftsmanship of each Winter Book makes it an avidly collected series, included in museum and rare book library collections across the country and around the world.

Winter Books of the past have featured such treasured Minnesota writers as Robert Bly, Louise Erdrich, Kevin Kling, Bill Holm, Louis Jenkins, Carol Bly, Larry Millett, Patricia Hampl, Judith Guest, Jon Hassler, and Bryan Thao Worra, among many others.
