Yde et Olive Zine by Evie Giaconia

$10.00

“Queerness is often perceived as being of the present. Queer history is hard to locate, having been intentionally obscured, looked past, and overwritten. This zine interprets the queer events of two medieval plays, Yde et Olive and its retelling Miracle de ka fille d’un roy through a lens of transmasculinity. In these texts, dating to the 13th and 15th centuries, the female protagonist disguises herself as a man, marries a princess, and, through miraculous intervention, is physically and/or visually (depending on the text) transformed into a man in front of onlookers.

As a queer person in the 21st century reading queerness into medieval history, these plays provide a fertile lens through which to view identity, gender, and transformation. My zine encapsulates several striking scenes from the plays, with a transmasculine twist: the angel Gabriel with a testosterone shot, a stag bearing the trans flag on its antlers, and Yde, disrobing to reveal top surgery scars. - Evie Giaconia
